World of Maths

Students in Years 1 to 4 at Cornerstone Christian College were recently given a fun-filled educational incursion, when the ‘World of Maths’ creators came to visit.

Armed with challenging activities, puzzles, logic games and the like, students were given the opportunity to work their way through a morning of fun by our guest.

Mike Matthews had the children mesmerised from the moment they entered, with even the least academic students soaking in his charismatic leadership of the morning.  After spending time with the students as a group, and challenging them to not be afraid of making mistakes but to use them as tools for learning, the students were placed into teams.  As teams, they worked through a series of puzzles, challenges and games that provided something for everyone.  From working out the weight order of objects, to completing puzzles, to physically challenging activities,  even parents and staff who attended had to think about solutions.

It was a brilliant morning that allowed every student, no matter their academic abilities, to engage and enjoy the world of mathematics.

The Heavens Declare

The Primary students at Cornerstone Christian College have given a great final performance at their end of year Presentation Night.

With a theme of ‘The Heavens Declare the Glory of God’, students in Years 2 to 6 let the story of Christmas unfold – from the viewpoint of the Angels who watched the birth of Jesus.

The clever use of dance, drama, music and song, brought about a truly spine-tingling performance.

Staff worked hard to see the students bring the night together – and to teachers and aids, we very much appreciate the skills and time you have spent to bring us such a special event.  To the students – you shone.  A truly beautiful event that explored the truths at the heart of Christmas.  Well done.

During the evening, Mrs Bev Hartley presented Pania Kara with the Primary Literacy Award, and the Hon. Troy Buswell, presented the Numeracy Award to Bianca Gervasi.  Congratulations to both young ladies on their academic endeavours.

College Principal, Bruce Douglas, addressed the audience and outlined future plans for the College, which include a Dunsborough Campus commencing in 2014, and a second Busselton campus being explored at this time.  He also outlined the desire to help each of the College’s students to discover their God-given gifts and talents, and for their educational experience to be an adventure.  He also wove through his address the message of Christmas, and the hope that Jesus brings.

A moving and brilliantly executed performance.  Well done to everyone who helped bring it all together.

Marketing Magnificence

Marketing Magnificence

The Primary School has pooled its resources together to make a big mark in their Technology and Enterprise subject area at Cornerstone.

Students, from Years 1 though to Year 6 have been showing their understanding of the market place, and created a fun-fair of sorts for other students and parents to participate in.

From hand-made crafts, afternoon teas, food, games and face-painting, $1365.80 was raised – which the students will now spend on items in the Compassion Catalogue.  This shopping experience will allow the students to purchase items that will benefit some of the poorest people in the world, by providing life-saving and practical items to impoverished communities.

Each class took responsibility for one stall or series of activities on the day. Some items were made in class, and others were created at home and shared at the market. Whatever the origins, the success of the day is sure to see its return in the years ahead.

The Year 4 class were required to create a game or activity, (such as guess how many jelly beans in the jar, or knock the bottle or cans over), and then come up with a marketing strategy. They were required to create the rules for the event, source prizes, determine prices, produce advertising, sell the item on the day, and work with other team members. All elements they are likely to encounter if they were to enter the commercial market.

Each year group experienced a similar process, and the result was an oval filled with students all doing their best for a great cause.

Staff were thrilled at the atmosphere created.

‘The students have done remarkably well, and have shown a great deal of commitment to the project to achieve such a wonderful result’, a number of teachers said.

Parents were equally enthusiastic. ‘I hope this will be back again next year. What a wonderful success it is’, said Caroline, one of the Mums who attended on the day.

Special thanks must go to our exceptional and creative staff, the parents who made a big contribution on the day, and of course, the students – who ultimately were at the heart of the successful debut of the Cornerstone Market Day. Great work!

Primary Production

primary concert 145The Primary students at Cornerstone Christian College presented a colourful production to a packed audience on Monday evening.  Hundreds of parents and extended family members watched the story of Christmas unfold, and delighted in the humour, costumes and budding acting skills.

The Year 1 class set the scene, singing a humorous story about the over-worked innkeeper – who gave another perspective on the original Christmas story.  Each year group then followed by presenting a musical item, and after formalities and presentations were made, joined together to sing ‘Seasons of Love’.

A colourful and heart-warming presentation about the story at the centre of Christmas.

Star Work, Super Readers and Sensational Mathletics

Whilst the Primary School has a large Assembly twice per term in the Auditorium, a weekly event is also held in the undercover area of the College each Tuesday morning.  This smaller event is used to primarily acknowledge the great work, effort and behaviour of students.

This morning, the Year 1-6 students gathered with their teachers to celebrate the great things happening around the College.

Cathryn, the Children’s Resource Officer from the Busselton Library was present, and she acknowledged students who participated in a reading event over the summer holidays.  The Summer Reading Challenge required each participant to read a minimum of 10 books and five students were presented with certificates during the Assembly today.

Star work was also on display, and a number of children obtained Silver and Gold Certificates for their work in Mathletics.   Each teacher also selected two or three students from their class to have the honour of being acknowledged for wonderful work, attitude or effort.

Playing in the Sand

beach carnival 003

The Year 1 – 4 students at Cornerstone Christian College were given the day off from the books during the past week, and sent to play at the beach instead.    The lower primary school’s annual Beach Carnival was the reason to enjoy what beautiful Busselton has to offer.

A wonderful group of volunteer parents came and assisted teaching staff in making the day such a success.  Bean bag races, water races and sandcastle competitions were on the agenda, and a great deal of fun was had on a beautiful summer’s day.

For the record, Judah came away with the trophy, narrowly beating Benjamin in the points race.

College teacher, Miss Veitch and her assistant, Mrs King used their exceptional organisational skills to bring together this traditional Cornerstone event and it went off without a hitch.

Deputy Principal, Mrs Edie Strutt, was thrilled with the day.

”It has been so good to have such a lot of parents coming and not just watching the event, but being actively involved.  It has been a tremendous day”, she said.

Water Fun

wet and wonderful 062The final day of the College year was spent enjoying the warm weather and getting wonderfully wet.

Primary students participated in a number of water-based activities on the oval, whilst the high-school students made their way to the Recreation Centre and made use of the water-slide there.

A number of teachers found the temptation just too hard to resist, and were active participants in the frivolity.

The students have had a terrific day, and the smiles on the faces seen here are testament to the success of the event.

A wonderful day of fun to celebrate what has been a remarkable year at Cornerstone.

Primary Presentation Evening

primary concert 031

The 2009 school year is almost complete, and last night was celebrated with a wonderful presentation by the Primary School classes.

A drama- based on the Biblical events of Christmas, and put together by Miss Sarah Durell – had parents and other guests mesmerised.  Each year group presented an element of the story in drama, song or dance which showed a great deal of variety and talent.  The ”Truth Unveiled” was a wonderful production that showed the hard work of staff and students alike.

During the course of the evening, the Hon.Troy Buswell MLA and State Treasurer presented the 2009 Numeracy Award to Johaline Enslin.  Principal Graeme Cross presented Jack Wallace with the Literacy Award.  Students were also acknowledged for exceptional results in the State MSE testing.

Mr Cross addressed those present, and re-inforced the College’s desire to put kids first.  He also announced that 2010 will be our ”Year of Community” where we are endeavouring to build a stronger sense of connection between all those involved with the College.

At the conclusion of the evening, Mr Cross was joined by Mr Sean Smith and Mr Todd Ellery in engaging the audience in a sing-a-long,  which had the crowd on their feet and thoroughly enjoying the moment.

A great night of celebration.

Marvellous Maths Day

maths day 035

Today saw the students at the College brushing up on all things Mathematical, at the annual Marvellous Maths Day.

Primary students from Years 1-6 were involved in a number of activities, and parents and grandparents were invited to be a part of the fun.

From Smarty Maths and Six Shooter, to Shopping and Snakes & Ladders - it was surprising to see how many games were on offer that involved numeracy in some form or another.  Each class divided into teams and rotated through the activities with their guests in tow.  Prizes were on offer and parents were seen to be quite competitive!

A large number of visitors came along for the fun, which was especially appreciated by the students.

The day was a tremendous success and thanks goes to Mrs Strutt and the Primary teaching team, who organised and co-ordinated  the event.
