It was a case of experiencing all four seasons at the College’s recent annual inter-faction Sports Carnivals.

Students from Year 7 to Year 12 were bussed to Bunbury, to experience the professional facilities that the Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena offers.  With all the traditional athletic events on offer, the students ran, jumped, threw and tossed their way through the day.  The weather was positively Summery, and students, staff and parents enjoyed near perfect conditions.  On the following day, the Primary students (Year 3-6) experienced a less than glorious day, with wind, rain and hail making the outing a little more challenging.

Some colourful costumes were found amongst the students as well, with particular colour displayed by the Year 11 boys. Full body suits were worn by several, which made them stand-outs in the events, but not necessarily in performance.

As for the results, Naphtali faction was the clear overall winner in the Secondary school, with Judah not far behind.  Reuben & Benjamin finished in third and fourth places respectively.  The Primary Carnival still needs to complete several events to determine winners, after poor weather called the event off early.

Students who have performed exceptionally well will be selected to participate in the upcoming interschool events in coming days.  The results from the interschool event will lead to Champion Boys and Girls in each year group being identified and rewarded.

It was a case of experiencing all four seasons in one day at the College’s annual inter-faction Sports Carnival.

Students from Year 3 to Year 12 were bussed to Bunbury, to experience the professsional facilities that the Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena offers.  With all the traditional athletic events on offer, the students ran, jumped, threw and tossed their way through the day.  Significant numbers of parents came to cheer on the athletes, many wearing the colours of their children’s factions.

Some colourful costumes were found amongst the students as well, with particular colour displayed during the Year 11 & Year 12 100 metre girls race. An interesting array of clothing choices were utilised, but the girls were united in their desire to do their best, as well as enjoy each other’s company.

As for the results, Judah were the clear overall winners, but not far behind was Reuben.  Naphtali & Benjamin finished in a tied third and four place.

Students who have performed exceptionally well will be selected to participate in the upcoming interschool events in coming days.  The results from the interschool event will lead to Champion Boys and Girls in each year group being identified and rewarded.  Stay tuned for further details.

A Record in Time

A Record in Time

jozef

Jozef, a Year 7 student at Cornerstone has broken two records in one hit.  The first was that he now holds the record for the 100m Under 13′s event in the ACC (Associated & Catholic Colleges of WA) Interschool Athletics.  The second is that he is the first Cornerstone student to break a previous record.

Jozef ‘s record was for a time of 13.25 seconds.  The old record was 13.30 seconds.  The field was diverse and the competition strong, so we are especially proud of Jozef’s achievement.

Jozef wasn’t the only student who shone at the recent carnival, held at the new WA Athletics Stadium in Perth.  He was joined by a number of students who placed high in the Individual Champion Awards.

Miriam Carley placed 3rd as the Open Division Individual Champion, Cedric Adinkwuye placed 3rd as the U15 Male Individual Champion, Ethan Ashon placed 4th as the U15 Individual Champion and Hendrik Enslin placed 3rd as the Under 16 Individual Champion.  Jozef added to his record breaking position, by also placing 4th as the Under 13′s Champion.

According to College teacher, Mr Greg Spencer, Cornerstone has performed exceptionally well.

‘We are a small school competing against much larger schools, which means we take a much smaller squad up for the carnival.  We are therefore very proud of our athletes and their huge effort on the day’,  he said.

To each participant, we celebrate your results with you.

In what can only be described as a wonderful morning of fun and celebration, the College’s Pre-Primary to Year 2 students took part in their very own athletics event last Friday.

Given the small size of some of those involved, discus was replaced by a plate tossing competition, high-jump involved balloons, javelin consisted of straws and the shot-put event found students tossing a bean bag.  Running races, leap-frog competitions and a backward egg and spoon race were also on the agenda.

Mr Caleb Murphy and Mr Lukas Martens, with the aid of some senior students and parents, put the students through their paces on a beautiful spring morning.  A crowd of enthusiastic family members watched on with delight as their children competed against one another.

A great initiative that provided fun as well as some subtle training for more serious events in the future.

Sports on Track

sport 370Cornerstone’s annual Athletics Carnival took a turn towards being a professional event recently.   We became the first school to utilise the new Bunbury Regional Athletics Arena.

The students loved the opportunity to run on a track, to use the jumping pits and the arenas specifically designed to host discus, javelin and shot put.

For the first time, all students in Years 3 – 12 participated together at a single event and this seemed to be popular amongst many families.

Mr Lukas Martens is not only the teacher who organised the event, but also the President of the region’s Little Athletics program.  His love for the sport and his desire for each student at Cornerstone to have every advantage possible, married beautifully into this successful event.

The results from the day were

                          Primary school:             Secondary school:                     OVERALL

1st                    Judah                                 Reuben                                            Judah

2nd                 Reuben                               Naphtali                                         Reuben

3rd                  Benjamin                           Judah                                              Naphtali

4th                  Naphtali                             Benjamin                                       Benjamin

A sensational day that not only was in a great location with great weather, but which held a wonderful carnival atmosphere where everybody’s efforts were celebrated.

Mr Martens is hopeful that the success of the day may lead to further interest in the Little Athletics program.  Anyone interested may be interested in the details to follow:

This week has held the Athletic Carnivals for both the Primary and Secondary Schools at the College.

The students dressed in their appropriate colours and came along to test their athletic abilities against their peers.

As seem from the pictures to follow, the events were a terrific success and thanks goes to those who organised the events, and parents and students who assisted on the respective carnival days.

The Year 9/10 students at Cornerstone Christian College have been not only fine-tuning their jumping skills in preparation for the upcoming Athletics carnival, but have been learning how to coach others in those skills.

The winter sunshine made a perfect canvas for the students to learn the correct style for successful long-jump and high-jump.  Under the guidance of College teacher, Mr Lukas Martens, who is also the President of the region’s Little Athletics Association, students were taken through the finer aspects of style and technique.

Mr Martens is providing a Coaching Option this term, and using his own skills as a qualified Athletics Coach to help students learn methods of aiding others in their sporting endeavours.

Learning extension for long jump and take-off positions for high jump were on the agenda and the students quickly grasped the methods shown.

This Friday the true test of success will be measured, when the students pull their skills together and compete against one another in the College’s annual carnival.
