It is with pleasure that the College can make the following introduction. Mr Will Heyes joined the teaching team at Cornerstone in 2009 and he is currently the teacher in charge of the English and Media subjects at the College. As well as these areas of expertise, he also takes responsibility for the French language option that is offered in the secondary school. Will Heyes comes with a vast array of qualifications and experience that make him an ideal educator for the students under his tutelage.
Will has a signficant number of qualifications behind him. He holds a degree with joint honours in English and Media studies, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate of Education. He has travelled widely in both his education, as well as with his tenures as a teacher. His undergraduate degree was obtained from the University of Stirling (Scotland) and University of Massachusetts, followed by his post graduate studies being earned at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Since qualifying, Will has taught in London, Madrid, Hampshire, Kambalda and Coolgardie, before his position here in Busselton.
Will is quick to point out that he is passionate about his career. As far as working at Cornerstone, he particularly enjoys the friendly atmosphere amongst staff, families and students, and the opportunity he has to share his passion for knowledge and learning. He also appreciates being able to simply be himself, and to follow his other love – that of being a Christian.
This philosophy casts within his role as an educator. His greatest desire is for his students to obtain educational success, but to also grow in their knowledge and understanding of what God has done for them and us all.
‘I really want my students to think smart and to learn to ask the right questions,’ he said.
It has become apparent that Will is also keen to explore new experiences for his students which will enhance their educational outcomes. He has recently instigated connections with other schools to provide our students with the opportunity to compete in debates within the region. Whilst still in its infancy, he is encouraged by the enthusiastic willingness of his participants and holds high hopes for a progression in skills and results as time passes.
Also central to who Will is as a person, is his love for history, international affairs and politics. He believes that these are all areas that influence him deeply as a person.
His other love is for his family. Will’s wife, Cindy, is also employed at Cornerstone, as a Science Lab Assistant and Teachers’ Assistant. His sons, Jeremy and Daniel, are both educated within the Primary School at Cornerstone.
In his spare time, Will enjoys sports such as golf, tennis, hockey and cycling. He also has interests in photography, film and reading. As one might expect from an English specialist, amongst his very favourite books are George Orwell’s 1984 and Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. As for music, his preference is more classical, with a particular love for Baroque Choral.
Will and his family call Margaret River home, and enjoy the lifestyle and relationships they have established there. They have made Margaret River Baptist their spiritual home.
As for those of us at the College, we are also absolutely delighted that he and his young family call Cornerstone home – and we are indeed privileged to have his expertise and educational excellence amongst us.
