Mrs Penny Ravenscroft is a popular and enthusiastic teacher within the College’s secondary team and we are delighted to be able to make this introduction.
Penny has been with the College for a relatively short time, but never-the-less has already made her mark as a talented and enthusiastic educator who brings the very best out of her students.
Penny comes to Cornerstone with a Bachelor of Theology from the Australian College of Ministries and a Graduate Diploma of Education from Notre Dame in Perth. Her skills are diverse however, and currently she teaches a range of subjects, including English, Maths and Drama.
Penny loves her job and particularly enjoys the students she has in her classes. In Penny’s words, she says; “I love working with teenagers. I love the fact that every student comes with their own personality and character, and that each one of them has a story to tell.” This heart for her students is an underlying reason for her popularity.
Her style of teaching is relaxed and fun, but with clear boundaries her students are to operate within. She encourages discussion and provides students with opportunities for hands-on learning. In each of her subjects, she aims to tailor the topics and activities around the particular students in a class and what their gifts and passions are. Penny believes it is important to build a strong sense of community within a classroom, and with that comes teaching opportunities for students to care for one another and show responsibility.
Penny understands that each student has their own level of ability, yet she encourages students to push themselves further in expanding their skills. Whilst she acknowledges that some students may never be A+ students, as long as they are progressing and giving their best then she believes she has succeeded as a teacher. Her desire is for each student to reach their own personal best, and does all she can within the classroom with that aim in mind.
Amongst her peers, she is considered a gifted teacher who does some amazing work with drama. She walks the corridors with a smile and is approachable to staff and students alike.
Penny is enthusiastic about Cornerstone and particularly enjoys working with the committed, caring and fun-loving teachers alongside her.
Penny aims to be an encourager to her students and makes special effort to listen. Her view is that she never wishes her teaching of content to become more important than the students themselves.
