Lisa Smith

Lisa McCredden

Mrs Lisa Smith (nee McCredden) is a delightful member of our Senior School teaching team and worthy of introduction.

Lisa is responsible for teaching Society and Environment to the Year 7-9 students at the College, as well as Year 8 computing and the Organic Gardening option.

Lisa comes to the College with a significant array of qualifications behind her.   After completing high school with her own remarkable TER score (top 10%), she completed a double degree at Edith Cowan University in Mount Lawley.    Lisa holds a Bachelor of Arts (Education) and a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) with a major in Society and Environment and a minor in English.  There is no doubt that she is highly qualified to teach the students at Cornerstone as she has done over the past 3 years.

Lisa is a passionate educator.  In her words, she says: “I love the kids and the subjects that I teach.  I love the dynamic environment and the diversity of working with different kids in different subject areas each day.  I love seeing them engage in my subject area, and seeing them make meaning between the content and their everyday lives.”

Mrs Smith is enthusiastic about her students understanding the concept of Active Citizenship, which involves the democratic process, social justice and environmental sustainability.  She tries to provide opportunities for students to progress in these areas through the topics they study.  She  is passionate about her students knowing about Australia, particularly about its history and geography.  She believes that every child should know the basics and that through this knowledge a love for our nation can be born.  From that will come engaged and contributing members of society.

Lisa is also affectionately known within the College as our resident ”Greenie”.  She believes that it is important not only that her students grasp the content of what they are taught,  but that they develop a sense of empathy with others and think about how their actions can make a positive difference to others and the environment.   With this outcome in mind she established the Organic Gardening option to provide kids with an opportunity to look after the environment in a practical way.  This class has endeavoured to engage all Cornerstone students and even the local community in projects in this field.

Lisa is known for her creativity in educating and really enjoys planning these activities.  She always endeavours to ensure her students can make a link between what they are studying and their own lives.  Relevance is what makes learning adhere in a students mind.
