Welcome to Year 2 with Miss Cindy Dowell.

Cindy has been responsible for our year 2 class for the past 4 years and is a well loved and respected part of the College teaching team.  She comes to Cornerstone with a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from Curtin University in Perth.

Cindy believes that Year 2 is an exciting year where the students further develop and consolidate the basic skills learnt in Year 1.  She endeavours to foster enthusiasm for learning and encourages a love of reading.  Her hope is that all Year 2 students will be inspired to become life-long learners who take an active part in their community, showing care for their environment and their neighbours.    With this aim in mind, character building and friendship skills are introduced and practiced.

Cindy delights in teaching concepts and facts to children for the very first time and loves to watch them discover new things about this world and beyond.  There is considerable excitement in the classroom on the afternoon designated for science experiments.  Cindy enjoys seeing her students enthusiastic about their learning and there is no doubt that this happens on these occasions.

The Year 2 class has a particular flavour in Cindy’s hands and a love for books is a big part of that.   During this year,  the ability to identify words and reading sounds becomes more automatic.   Cindy works hard to allow each student to work at their particular level, and within the classroom there are a number of different groups that operate to cater for this.  This attention to a child’s specific abilities is also utilised in homework tasks as well.

All students within this year group can access the Learning Support Centre if deemed necessary.  There are also opportunities for students to participate in extension work if they have the capacity. 

Each child is recognised as an individual and every effort is made to ensure that they receive the attention and specific guidance they need.
